I thoroughly enjoyed speaking and interacting with the attendees at this years IKS workshop. This sector does not get that much attention, and has fallen a long way from the spotlight that it had on it in the dot com era. Yet I left with much to think about, and encouraged that there are so many people actively working to move the world of Search and Semantic technologies forward. In my keynote presentation, I explored the reality of the market for Enterprise Search technology today. I tried hard to make this a sobering reality check of where things really stand, and the very real challenges ahead. Yet alongside the fact that Search has failed to truly deliver on its promises, we need Search to work, there is no real choice for us. Hence from over promising and under delivering, there remains an immense amount of opportunity to drive the technology and it’s usage forward in the coming years.
